There are nine students attending our district's one-room school house this year. That's nine students, total, grades K-6th. Two Kinders, two 1st graders, two 2 nd graders and three 6th graders. So, what does that mean for my Kindergartner and Second Grader?
With one teacher/principal, one full time aide and one part-time Spanish aide, it means LOTS of one on one attention. The school is very academic, they work hard and they play hard. Bryce was reading during the second month of his Kindergarten year and now, so is Paige. All the kids learn and progress at their own pace, what ever that may be. They're not forced and they're not held back.
Similar to home school, but I don't have to do it!
At first I was concerned about Paige being the only girl in the school up through the 5th grade level, but no longer. I actually think she likes being the only little girl....and why not? She get's a whole lot of attention from the boys, even with one of them being her brother.
Now with both kids attending the one-room school, I'm finding by beginning in Kindergarten, they don't know any different with regards to the size of the school and the amount of children. I keep both Bryce and Paige active in many activities outside of school. Paige spends time with her girlfriends, so she's not missing the important girl time where she can dress up in princess outfits and such......although, she could probably talk those boys at school into playing princess with her if she really wanted to.....I'm sure of it.
Confidence is not lacking at all.......amazing what a little sheltering will do.

i do believe your kids have the best of both worlds - one-on-one attention like home-schooling but like you said, someone else is doing it! :)

LOVE this concept! The gears are turning as to how to implement this for my family/community. Afterall, this is how the prairie was settled- a one room school house on every quarter. In Barnes County (directly to the east of my county) at the peak of homesteading, there were 99 one room school houses. Today there are two school districts.
Correction- a one room school house on every SECTION of land (one square mile).
This is so cool! We are buying a farm out in the country and the school aslo only has 9 kids! When I add my two girls it will be 11, they have great food, for lunch and breakfast, they provide snacks, unlimited field trips! They get their own lockers too, I volunteer a lot so it will be lots of fun. Our school is the smallest in the state of Colorado, its Agate. We are excited for this change, we come from the city so you the difference in numbers!

Love this! I went to a one-room schoolhouse in Pendroy, Montana for my first few years of school and we had 9 kids in our school -- one was my older brother. It was such a perfect place to start school. I think about it a lot now that my kids are in grade school and middle school - having that attention and going ahead where you could and staying back where you needed to is so hard to achieve in any other setting. I'm wondering if your one-room school is public or private. Quite a wonderful opportunity you have for your children's education!
We have aquite a few one room Amisg schoolhouses in my area. Yours is very similar to theirs.
By the looks of that last picture...I don't think you will have much to worry about when it comes to Miss Paige ;)
It's so nice that your kids get to experience this. It's like living some of our country's history.
It is too easy to get lost in the crowd in most schools these days.
It sounds like your kids are attending a private school--is it private or does the state pay for it?
