Marin County Farm Day Tomorrow!!

Marin County Farm Day is a fun, child oriented event that is coming up tomorrow, Thursday, March 20th. 

Held at the Marin Civic Center, 9 a.m. to noon,  this free event provides hands-on educational experiences outside the classroom for school children of all ages.  Over 30 Northern California ranchers, growers, producers and educators provide interactive exhibits on agriculture, health, farm animals, gardens and environmental education.

If you come by, make sure to stop by and say hi to me at the Tri-Valley 4H and Marin County Farm Bureau tables where we'll have rabbits to pet and calves and sheep to visit.

There's also quite a few interactive tables set up where kids can learn about insects,

maybe do a little gardening,

and create some art work.

There are many demonstrations to view as well.  Last year the 'Loomers' were on hand to answer questions and show their skills.

But for my little girl, the vaulting experience was a favorite.....she only wished it had been done a real horse!

You never know what new experience you might encounter at Farm Day.......nature at it's best.  Hope to see you there!

Marin County Farm Day 2012 & Winning Calf Name

The two and a half week old calf we brought to Marin County Farm Day came home with a name.  After tallying all the votes, the winning name is FAITH.  

We will register this calf with her new official name of Faith.  Thanks to all that participated in the voting at Farm Day, it was so much fun!

Marin County Farm Day seems to get bigger and better every year.  There seemed to be many more animals showcased this year and the weather also cooperated, staying dry, thankfully.

TT w/Linky: Accidental Farm Girl

As many of you already know, I didn't grow up on a dairy farm, and now calling one home, I've learned many things about farm living.  Things such as never turn your back to a bull, remain calm no matter what the circumstance, patience is mandatory {still working on that one} and how a little furry, two week old calf can teach you so much....... dairy calves, they capture a special place in my heart.

But dang it!  When one of those little buggers catches me off guard, I begin to rethink my heartfelt love...

Marin County Farm Day~Coming Up!

Marin County Farm Day is a fun, child oriented event that is coming up this Thursday, March 22nd. 

Held at the Marin Civic Center,  this free event provides hands-on educational experiences outside the classroom for school children of all ages.  Over 30 Northern California ranchers, growers, producers and educators provide interactive exhibits on agriculture, health, farm animals, gardens and environmental education.

If you come by, make sure to stop by and say hi to me at the Tri-Valley 4H and Marin County Farm Bureau tables where we'll have rabbits to pet and calves and sheep to visit.  And this year, you can help name our two week old dairy calf we'll have on hand by voting on one of these four choices:

• Fergie
• Fiona
• Flo
• Faith

The nine year old mother of this calf is named Flora.  When a calf is born we name her with a name beginning with the same letter as her mother's name for registration and organization.

Emma and Barina {the calves} at Farm Day

Today we loaded up Emma and Barina in the trailer, drove in the torrential rains, down the freeway in backed up traffic to make it to Marin County Farm Day. 

Farm Day provides hands-on educational experiences outside the classroom, including stations designed by the Marin Master Gardeners. Approximately 30 Northern California ranchers, farmers, producers and educators provide interactive exhibits on agriculture, health, farm animals, gardens and environmental education.

This was Emma and Barina's first public outing and they did great! 

Kids that normally don't get the chance to see a farm animal up close were able to pet and look at these calves.  The Jersey calf belongs to Bryce's fellow 4H member and schoolmate, Gracie, Justice her calf is 4 months old and will also be shown at the fair this summer.

 

My nephew, Gavin, will be showing Emma in the Sonoma-Marin fair this summer....I think they've bonded.

Our Tri-Valley 4H had a display of rabbits and cavies for kids to pet and learn about.  This type of event is always a great opportunity for the 4H members to teach other kids and adults about the animals they care for.  Lots of questions were asked and they were able to answer them with confidence.

All Marin County elementary schools have the opportunity to participate in an essay contest and a poster contest.  Cash prizes and ribbons are awarded at the event.

Bryce walked down to see if his school received a prize.

Second place for the poster his school created.  There are five K through 1 students at Bryce's one-room school, so each grade was responsible for one section of the poster.

 Northbay Dairy Women had a booth with the help of current Dairy Princess, Emile Strand. 

  

There are many hands-on booths the kids can participate in....here they are planting pumpkin seeds to take home.

Looming {is that a word?}demonstrations were happening as well.

Clo the Cow of Clover Stornetta made an appearance.  Paige and her cousin, Leila  followed Clo around for a while.

Our friend, Willy, gave roping demonstrations and taught kids how to handle a rope with the Novato Horsemen group.

The sheep belong to the Pozzi family, who are M.C. Farm Bureau board members and were a big hit.

And sometimes some of the most educational demonstrations take place at the end of an event, when only a few attendees remain.  Bunny breeding session....that's all I'm sayin'.

See How We Celebrate National Agriculture Day

This week is National Ag Week. There are events going on all over the U.S. to help educate the public in many different ways. Here in Marin County, CA, we participated in the 26th annual Marin County Farm Day. This year's Farm Day theme was "Udderly Marin Cows". This free event provides hands-on educational experiences outside the classroom for school children Kindergarten through 6th grade and for children of all ages including preschool. A special highlight this year is the Dairy Council of California's mobile dairy classroom. Over 30 Northern California ranchers, growers, producers and educators provide interactive exhibits on agriculture, health, farm animals, gardens and environmental education. Farm Day is a collaborative effort of the following agencies: Marin County Department of Cultural and Visitor Services, Marin County Farm Bureau, Marin County Office of Education, Golden Gate Farmers Market, North Bay Dairy Women, Marin Farmers Markets, Marin County Department of Weights and Measures, and the University of California Cooperative Extension/Master Gardeners/4-H Paige enjoyed meeting this little goat......... Paige is helping her cousins, Morgan & Jack at the Tri-Valley 4-H booth with their rabbits. This event provides 'hands on' experience to the public, where they can pet the animals and ask questions......

Bryce, learning about hatching chicks.... Bryce said 'Hi' to Clo the Cow from Clover Stornetta.... Balloons given out by Tomales FFA (Future Farmers of America)...... Bryce is receiving his balloon..... All Marin County schools are able to participate in contests according to age. This is the mural Bryce's class put together which won 1st place (he's pointing to the green cow that he colored)..... There are many indoor, 'hands on' demonstrations. Here is one on roping...... Ponies to pet.....

Sheep to pet......... At the Marin County Farm Bureau booth, children were asked to guess how many pieces of fruit were in the jar, the most accurate guess won a prize.................... Here is an amazing outdoor sheepherding exhibition....... Check out this Border Collie!........ The Dairy Council of California demonstrates the milking of a cow with their mobile dairy classroom............. There were many opportunities to get up close and personal with farm animals...... Here is the North Bay Dairy Women's booth educating about 'Farms, Food & You'..... Learning about Honeybees. The children were able to 'build' their own Honeybee keeper to take home with them....... This is Bryce's........ The honeybees crawl in the open end and make a home........ Learning how a few vegetables grow.......

An education on different types of oranges and how they grow......... More friends to pet......... This rat was moving so fast, it was difficult to snap a photo.......

Children were able to take a little worm farm home with them. This is Bryce's.......

More education and take home goodies...... Bryce was very excited about the milk carton piggy bank he brought home....... Bryce also collected a few packages of seeds to take home. Can't wait to plant them!......... More goodies that were taken home and placed on the fridge.......... Bryce was very interested in this handout he brought home......especially with regards to the reasoning behind why the sugar and fats category was so small compared to the other, healthier categories. A great teaching tool. He immeadiately placed it on our fridge using his mosquito magnets.......... A fun morning in it's entirety!!
