A VIP Lunch and Potatoes for 70

If you follow me on Facebook, many of you noticed I was a bit stressed over roasting baby potatoes for 70 last week for Marin County Farm Bureau's V.I.P. Luncheon.  Sweatin' bullets actually.  But when friends and farmers come together, there's all sorts of help.....I should know this by now.

The V.I.P. lunch was held at the Pomi Ranch, a.k.a. Deer Camp.  My first job of the day was to get these potatoes going.  After board member, Nicola, washed all 40 pounds of them, Mark Pomi, had a plan for success; boil them first to soften them up. After that was completed, he and neighbor, Alan Cooper halved them as I layered them all in a gigantic roasting pan with all the goodies. We used olive oil, kosher salt, garlic, pepper and fresh rosemary sprigs from my garden.  Pop them in the oven for a while and that was it!

Pt. Reyes Station Western Weekend

The forecast was for scattered showers, the outdoor event was Pt. Reyes Station's Western Weekend.

We lucked out, the sky didn't even shed a drop.

Western Weekend is all about an annual parade through town at noon, which lasts at least one hour.

It's also about Marin County Farm Bureau's chicken barbecue.  Normally we barbecue the chicken off site and then drive it in, but this year, MCFB board member and good friend, John Taylor rallied up a bunch of portable bbq's and a cook crew so we could barbecue the chicken right there in downtown.

Driving into town that morning at 10a.m., the aroma of bbq chicken filled the entire downtown area.  It was so nice doing all the barbecuing at the actual venue.

The chicken was finished and being steamed in pots before the parade began.

Perfect.  My kids were HUNGRY so they were able to eat before the parade began.

Then we walked over and watched the parade coming down main street.

Pt. Reyes-Olema 4-H Club put together this cute float....all about baking.

As they passed the judges booth, they stopped and served them cookies and milk.

They won 1st place for their float {and efforts}.

Chloe even enjoyed her first parade experience.  She was doing her circus dog act almost the entire time.  I think she wanted to join in.

With every parade, there's a Queen.  This year's queen is Alyssa Tanner.

After the parade ended, it was back over to the BBQ area to start feeding the huge crowd ready for chicken. 

I was on the clean up crew, so I snapped pics while everyone else was serving.

Doesn't this look good?!  Unfortunately it was gone by the time I got back over to it.

There was also a chili cook off, cornbread competition going on.

Such a fun day!  So glad the weather held off!

Emma and Barina {the calves} at Farm Day

Today we loaded up Emma and Barina in the trailer, drove in the torrential rains, down the freeway in backed up traffic to make it to Marin County Farm Day. 

Farm Day provides hands-on educational experiences outside the classroom, including stations designed by the Marin Master Gardeners. Approximately 30 Northern California ranchers, farmers, producers and educators provide interactive exhibits on agriculture, health, farm animals, gardens and environmental education.

This was Emma and Barina's first public outing and they did great! 

Kids that normally don't get the chance to see a farm animal up close were able to pet and look at these calves.  The Jersey calf belongs to Bryce's fellow 4H member and schoolmate, Gracie, Justice her calf is 4 months old and will also be shown at the fair this summer.

 

My nephew, Gavin, will be showing Emma in the Sonoma-Marin fair this summer....I think they've bonded.

Our Tri-Valley 4H had a display of rabbits and cavies for kids to pet and learn about.  This type of event is always a great opportunity for the 4H members to teach other kids and adults about the animals they care for.  Lots of questions were asked and they were able to answer them with confidence.

All Marin County elementary schools have the opportunity to participate in an essay contest and a poster contest.  Cash prizes and ribbons are awarded at the event.

Bryce walked down to see if his school received a prize.

Second place for the poster his school created.  There are five K through 1 students at Bryce's one-room school, so each grade was responsible for one section of the poster.

 Northbay Dairy Women had a booth with the help of current Dairy Princess, Emile Strand. 

  

There are many hands-on booths the kids can participate in....here they are planting pumpkin seeds to take home.

Looming {is that a word?}demonstrations were happening as well.

Clo the Cow of Clover Stornetta made an appearance.  Paige and her cousin, Leila  followed Clo around for a while.

Our friend, Willy, gave roping demonstrations and taught kids how to handle a rope with the Novato Horsemen group.

The sheep belong to the Pozzi family, who are M.C. Farm Bureau board members and were a big hit.

And sometimes some of the most educational demonstrations take place at the end of an event, when only a few attendees remain.  Bunny breeding session....that's all I'm sayin'.

Marin County Farm Bureau Annual Dinner

Last night we attended the Marin County Farm Bureau annual dinner.  There were around 116 people in attendance, which is a great turn out.  Our kids were two of the attendees.........they don't want to miss a thing!

The evening began with three members of our 4H club, leading the Pledge of Allegiance.....Logan Pomi, Bryce and Derrick Pomi {ages 8, 6 and 10}.  Great job 4Hers! Always good to give young kids the opportunity to stand on stage in front of a room full of adults and speak........just my opinion.

I found out Paige is a BIG ham and loves being on stage.

CA Farm Bureau President, Paul Wenger attended the dinner and gave a very engaging speech to the crowd.  Speaking about some CA farm issues, and the important role social media plays for farmers by giving them the opportunity to share their stories.

Nelson Gremmel, who recently retired from the Office of the Assessor Recorder,

 also receives the Friends of Farm Bureau award.

It was a late night for the kids, in bed by 10 p.m. only to get up early this morning for Marin County 4H Presentation Day.

Marin County Farm Bureau V.I.P. Luncheon

As many of you already know, Dominic is the current President of Marin County Farm Bureau and yesterday the organization held it's annual V.I.P. Luncheon.  The attendees usually include; all of our elected representatives, many of our county department heads, planning commissioners and planning staff and many other agriculture organizations.  This is an opportunity to bring the ranchers and all of our elected representatives together to get to know each other a little better on a more personal level.

Each year this luncheon is hosted on a Marin County ranch.  This year it was at the Pomi Ranch {aka: deer camp}.  By holding the event at a local ranch, our elected representatives can experience first hand where we, as ranchers live and the type of lifestyles we lead with the hopes of them better understanding where we're coming from when we speak on county and state issues.

Included on the menu was barbecued tri tip.



Fellow rancher, Jeff Rowley, donated his time to cook for the day.

My father-in-law, George, made his creamy mushroom saffron risotto for the crowd.  So Good.  We also had a nice, fresh green salad as well.

Looks like everyone enjoyed lunch and we lucked out with a nice, sunny day.
