Marin County Farm Day 2012 & Winning Calf Name

The two and a half week old calf we brought to Marin County Farm Day came home with a name.  After tallying all the votes, the winning name is FAITH.  

We will register this calf with her new official name of Faith.  Thanks to all that participated in the voting at Farm Day, it was so much fun!

Marin County Farm Day seems to get bigger and better every year.  There seemed to be many more animals showcased this year and the weather also cooperated, staying dry, thankfully.

Gavin's 'Lap Calf'

Our local county fair is just two weeks away and let me tell you, little Emma, the dairy calf is ready.  My nephew, Gavin, is showing Emma at the fair so he's been spending time at the ranch and working with her and his other heifer, Bella. 

Emma leads really well and is SUCH a sweetheart.  Gavin and I coined a new phrase {it's what we do at the calf barn along with naming every calf}.... 'Lap Calf ', because that's just what Emma is or would be if we let her.

My kids are still in school this week so I had a fun time hanging out with Gavin at the calf barn.  I really got to see Gavin's love for cows and calves come shining through.

"Say Cheese" says Gavin to Emma..........and LOOK, she did!

Spotty Spot Spot

Yep, that's what she wanted to name her.......the two day old dairy calf.  What can I say, but that's the first thing that popped into my four year old's head when she spotted this calf.......see the spot?

Remember Barina the Dairy Calf?

You first met Barina at 10 days old when we brought her on her very first outing to Marin County Farm Day, in March.  Now the little dairy calf is about a month and a half old so Paige and I thought we should give Barina her first halter training lesson.

I'm planning on taking Barina to a couple of upcoming outings, mainly so kids that don't have access to farm animals can come and see a dairy calf up close. Halter training her will benefit both of us.....Barina will feel safe and secure when on a lead rope and I'll {hopefully} have full control of her.

A Kid and a Calf

There is almost nothing I enjoy more than watching my kids interact with animals.  Especially farm animals.   With dairy calves, just the kindness of them with a child is so pleasurable to watch.

Remember Brittney?  Well on our 'Secret Tunnel ranch walk' the other day, Paige insisted that we visit her at the calf barn.  It wasn't necessary to insist at all because I'm always up for a visit to the calf barn.

We love Brittney.  She's so interactive with us.  Even though Paige fed the calves a little snack of alfalfa, which is in the feeder underneath her, Brittney still took the time to give Paige some love.......and licks.

She gave me some also.

Brittney has the perfect temperament as a prospect to enter in the county fair.......if only my kids were old enough.  Hmmm, maybe I can talk my nephew, Gavin, into choosing Brittney as his heifer entry this upcoming fair season.  We'll see.

Meet Dairy Calves Emma and Brittney

Nothing like a nice warm afternoon at the calf barn.  Is it really January?!  Because it was 68 degrees here yesterday.  I'll take it.

Yesterday was the day we chose two calves to begin halter training and because with two kids, you can't just pick one calf.  So, meet the two week old calf that Paige named Emma.  She's a little young to halter train but for her first lesson she did great!

We only had one calf halter on hand here on the farm, but I remembered my blogging and Twitter friend, Ryan Goodman posted a link on Twitter to a site that gave instructions on how to make your own rope halter. So we did. 

You've already met this calf the other day on my visit to the calf barn.  Bryce named this calf Brittney {after Brittney of The Chipmunk's, if you have kids, you know who Brittney is}.  Brittney is about three months old and very friendly but didn't like the halter too much. 

I'll keep you posted on Emma's and Brittney's progress!
