Invasion of the Dry Cows

If you've been following along with my horse, Joey's story, you then know he tends to founder when his pasture has grown rich, green grass and that he's in 'lock down' right now.

Joey's pasture is huge.  There's a ton of green grass that he looks longingly upon from the confines of his barn and small paddock.

This green grass must be eaten before Joey's let back out......enter, Dry Cows.  Dominic let a group of dry cows into the pasture to eat down some of the grass.....rich green grass has no adverse affects on a bovine.....they have four stomachs after all and can handle it.

Well on day two, the dry cows must have felt a bit of sympathy for poor ole Joey because they trompled down that hot wire fencing and busted him out of his confines.....oh yes they did!

Meet the Dry Cows

Our 'dry cows' are not only dry because of all the nice spring weather we've been having, but this group of ladies are called 'dry cows' because they are on break right now.  They are on hiatus from milking for 2 months.

All they need to worry about is eating, basking in the sunlight {if it's not cloudy} and sleeping.

When our dairy cows are pregnant, they are given a break from milking in the last 2 months of their pregnancy to concentrate all of their energy into the soon-to-be newborn calf that will be making an appearance soon.

Paige and I took a little stroll out to their corral to check on them and say hi.....the laundry that is piling up at the house can wait for another day.

In no more than 5 minutes, we were surrounded by them all.  They're all so very curious and sweet:)

Picking up Hay

Another work morning with Dominic.  We are having SO much fun!  My father-in-law just cut and baled, I don't know how many oat hay bales that are ready to be stacked and moved.  We needed to pick up a truck load to stack for the Dry Cows (cows that are not milking and / or ready to give birth anytime).  I drove the truck while Dominic and the two assistants followed behind loading the truck.

Once we had a truck load full, we drove into the corral where the dry cows are kept.  But first we had to drive through Milking Cow String #1.  We have two or three strings of milking cows, depending on how many cows we have lactating.  

Move girls...... 

Unload.....

Our two assistants got busy feeding.

And it's always fun climbing the haystack.

Good job guys!  And while they were finishing this up, I was looking for...........

this guy.  I didn't have to look far because he always has an eye or two on me whenever I'm around.  I can't get away from him!!

But he was on the other side of the fence.  I was safe ;)
