Farm Kids and Spring Rain

If you've been reading here for a while, you then know how much rain we've been getting in northern California all winter and spring. 

Buckets.

Loads.

The kids and I here on the farm couldn't take it any longer.  It was time to go out and play.  Rain or shine.

Off to the calf barn we headed, with the hopes of finding something interesting to do or play with. 

The kids decided they wanted to play beavers and build a dam.

Perfect!  This kept them busy for well over an hour.  They collected sticks, alfalfa, rocks to build up their dam.

Bryce was amazed that it was actually working.

Off to gather more alfalfa to finish up.

I'm hoping this will be the last day of our rainy season.  This week's forecast is calling for spring weather with one day even reaching the 80 degree mark!

What Farm Kids Do For Play

Gosh, we have really lucked out with the weather we've been having here in northern California.  Spending time outside is a definite must.  Today we headed down to the calf barn to see what we could find.

The thing about kids is, they can easily find things to entertain themselves that don't involve toys.  Actually, I think they may prefer it that way.

After checking in on Emma & Brittney, I wanted to sit in the warm sun for a little bit to warm my bones.  So I found the nice stack of alfalfa near the calf barn and planted my behind down while the kids took turns riding the gate.

No toys required. 

They could have easily played this game for an hour, or maybe two.

Later, when I asked both Bryce and Paige what they were thinking about as they were going for a ride on the gate, they answered:

Bryce: "I was thinking about how much fun I was having!"

Paige: "I was thinking, I needed to trim my toenails." 

Well, with this gorgeous, sunny weather, I can't say that a thought similar to Paige's hadn't crossed my mind as well, but mine was in the form of painting toenails.

Stuck in the Dairy Farm Cow Tofu

There are many, many days where we begin the afternoon looking like this.  Happy to be driving the feed wagon with Daddy.  Helping feed the dairy farm cows. 

I see especially witness large smiles when the kids can help Daddy drive the tractor.  I mean what four and six year old doesn't like to be in control........of anything, especially a large piece of machinery?

But inevitably, on the second or maybe third ride back up to the commodity barn, they end up staying  to play in the feed.  They can't help themselves, it's SO much fun!  Plus they know their mother LOVES doing laundry.

You may remember in one of my posts, that our dairy cows eat tofu mixed in their daily feed......14 tons weekly!  I'm not a tofu fan for myself but boy, the dairy cows sure like it!

With the wet weather we've been having lately, the tofu is a bit wet.  Bryce actually got his rubber boots stuck in it.  Just like wet cement. {I guess it's better the tofu than something else he could get himself stuck in on a dairy.....right?} 

I pulled him out.  I don't think he was too distressed over it.

We take a lot of baths at our house.  Sometimes two a day are required.
