We've been having a heat wave in Northern California the past week or so and smack dab in the middle of it was Dairy Show Day at the Marin County Fair.
The Marin County Fair is a five day fair but the large animals are hauled in on 'show day' and then hauled back home the same afternoon. This makes for a long day that begins at 5:30 a.m. with the kids {Bryce} washing his heifer before leaving the ranch and hauling her to the fair at 7 a.m.
Once the animals are unloaded at the fairgrounds, last minute touch-ups can be done. If the animals become soiled in the trailer {of course they do} on the ride down, they are sprayed off again before going in to the show ring.
Paige is not old enough to show just yet but loves handling animals so very much and can not WAIT to show her own calf two years from now. She was a huge help to a family friend, Gracie, helping her wash and lead her Jersey cows and calves.
We only have Holstein cows on our ranch, but guess what 'little miss' wants.....yes, a Jersey......"They're so cute, they look like deer!"
Ok, show time. Put on the whites, lead the heifer in the ring and hope for the best. During 'Showmanship' each competitor is judged on how he/she handles his animal all while keeping close attention to the Judge.
All the little kids did well. You never know what's going to happen in the ring and that's all part of the fun.
Bryce was happy with how his heifer, Jinx, did and he had so much fun..... that's what it's all about.
After showing, some down time is required by all, in the 95 degree shade....
What's YOUR favorite exhibit at the county fair??
