With strong winds coming from the west on most days at our house, our American flag is replaced once a year, due to the tattered edges it acquires. We choose to replace it on the 4th of July.....it just seems to fit.
Every morning of the 4th of July, for the past four years, the kids and Dominic replace the flag that flies high right outside our house. The very first year, Dominic, the kids and Papa {my father-in-law} raised the actual flag pole{but I accidentally erased that pic.....and it was a good one too}.
And sometimes, after our strong winds snap the flag line and our flag becomes tangled at the top of the pole, maintenance is required.
Whether you're staying close to home or traveling, wishing you all a safe and sane holiday, with lots of food, family, good friends and good times.
The proper way to dispose of an unserviceable flag is to burn it......found in the US Flag Code. TITLE 4 > CHAPTER 1 > Sec. 8(k). Which states:
"The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning"
You can find a good copy of the entire US Flag Code at the Legal Information Institute, Cornell Law School
Happy 4th of July to you and your families.

ReplyDeleteLOVE your maintenance equipment! We have a couple of pieces just like it. Great post!
ReplyDeleteWhat a super idea. We have made many visits to the US over the years and have always been impressed by the patriotism and the flags - you hardly ever see one here.
ReplyDeleteGreat tradition!!! My farmer buddy has one on top of his 100' silo. We usually have to replace it about every three months due to the wind whipping and tearing it.
ReplyDeleteA wonderful idea to do every July 4. And i hope everyones July 4 was a very good one. Richard from the Amish settlement of Lebanon,Pa
ReplyDeleteHow neat to teach the kiddoes about the flag. So many people don't know the proper way to display it.
ReplyDeleteWe replace our flag probably twice a year -- and I do have photos of my hubby raising the pole. I'll have to dig them out. :)
Love the tradition and what a neat way to remember to keep the flag in respectable condition!
