Normally on our visits to Lake Tahoe, we stay on the west or north shore of the lake, but this trip we wanted to mix it up a bit and stay on the south shore. Lake Tahoe, itself sits at an elevation of about 6,200 feet, sitting on the California and Nevada border. It is 72 miles around the rim and 22 miles long and 12 miles wide across the lake.
Our filtered view from our rental house is that of the famous, Cave Rock.
Cave Rock is 75 feet of solid stone that sits at the southern portion of Lake Tahoe-Nevada State Park and is the throat of an extinct volcano. Cave Rock is also known as sacred burial site for the Washoe Indians, and climbing up to the cave, or through it, is prohibited.....you must drive through it to make the trek around the rim of the lake.....you can see the opening in the rock in which you drive through, in the photo above.
Beautiful Lake Tahoe is the 3rd deepest lake in North America and the 10th deepest in the world. It's greatest depth is 1,645 feet and it averages 1,000 feet in depth.
