Almond, Peanut, Nut "Butter", "Paste" or "Spread"?

With last week's conversation regarding the labeling of Rice, Almond & Soy "Milk" or "Drink", it inspired me to ask the same question of the label "Butter".

Here's some food for thought.........

According to Wikipedia's definition of butter:

•Butter is a dairy product made by churning fresh or fermented cream or milk. It is generally used as a spread and a condiment, as well as in cooking applications such as baking, sauce making, and frying. Butter consists of butterfat, water and milk proteins.

So should the label "butter" be used solely on products made by milk and cream?

If so, then should the following be changed?
Peanut Paste?  Almond Paste?  Nut Paste?  Cashew Spread?

And what about body butter?!

I'm curious what your opinion is on this!

  2. HAHA! How about - "I can't believe it's NOT butter?" I mean REALLY! I think anything that doesn't have dairy products in it needs to be called something else BUT that being said - we all know that peanut butter doesn't HAVE dairy in it - it just SPREADS like butter. Well - when it's warm that is. :) LOL! :)

  5. I'm going with "spread" b/c that's what you do with it. Paste sounds like glue.

  6. I just love butter but peanut paste just doesn't sound good as peanut butter. it is a play on words. When you think butter you think yum yum.
