Holiday Chocolate Butter Cookies to go along with Santa's Milk

It's holiday baking season and I know many of us try to find something new and exciting to bake for the holidays.  I found this recipe straight out of Mrs. Claus' Cookbook to share with you.  I think it's a nice variation to the original Butter Cookie....who doesn't like chocolate?!  What better gift, than to give something created right from your own kitchen!

Holiday Chocolate Butter Cookies
Makes 3 dozen

Ingredients
1/2 cup sugar
3/4 cup sweet butter, softened
1 egg yolk
1 teaspoon almond extract
1 1/2 cups all purpose flour
1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder

Toppings: (as desired)

chocolate chips or vanilla candy coating (melted)
finely chopped almonds, pecans or walnuts
candy
flaked coconut
fruit preserves
colored sugar

Directions
Heat oven to 375 degrees. Combine sugar, butter, egg yolk and almond extract in a large bowl. Beat at medium speed, scraping bowl often until mixture is light and fluffy (2-3 minutes). Continue beating, gradually adding flour and cocoa, until well mixed (2-3 minutes). Shape rounded teaspoonfuls of dough into 1 inch balls. Place about an inch apart on cookie sheets. (shape balls or make sugar dipped glass or make thumbprint indentations). Bake 7-9 minutes or until set. Cool completely. Coat with melted chocolate or vanilla coating and decorate with chopped nuts, candy, coconut, preserves or colored sugar, as desired.

Let me know if you decide to try them!

  1. These look delicious and are a little different so I think I might add them to my cookie baking list! Have a Merry Christmas!
