Excitement on a Foggy Day

One of the climate issues we encounter when living near the coast is FOG.  Some people call it our 'natural airconditioning' because it visits us all summer long, actually all year long.  During the summer months, it really keeps things pretty cool on the days it visits us.

I don't like it.

But our cows do.  They don't like the hot weather, so in the area of northern California where we live, the cows really like the climate.  It's not too hot except maybe a few days in summer and it's not too cold.

I took a stroll outside with the macro lens today to see what exciting photos I could capture..... in the fog, then I came in to see what I could do with the dreary things on picnik.com.

Much more exciting when the editing is complete.

In our container garden, I found the seeds I had planted in the beginning of February had sprouted and are actually looking pretty good.  We've been having rain off and on for the past few months, there was no need for hand watering.  But today I gave them all a good drench, the containers they're growing in were dry.

The flat leafed parsley came up in bunches......

Garlic is looking good, I think......or was I supposed to separate and plant each clove?.....oops.

The carrots, amongst the wildflowers weeds look good.

And onions are coming up fabulously.

Can't wait til our weather warms up so the rest of the garden can go in.

What are you planting this year??

I am thinking about container gardening this year. Any advice for a beginner? Do you put rocks in the container bottoms for extra drainage? I think I want to to a salsa garden. That is as far as I have ruminated.
It is hard to think about a garden w/ 5-7 inches of new snow on the ground and predictions for more overnight.

We get foggy days too. Seems it comes more often during certain months... last year I think it was August. But when you live on the side of a small mountain you expect it because sometimes the clouds just hover over the mountaintop. I don't mind it once in a while but for long periods of time it would probably depress me a bit.

Lovely photo!

@Robyn, I'm new at container gardening also, but putting rocks in the bottom certainly wouldn't hurt! We'll be setting up our bigger beds in the next month or so but probably won't put in rocks:) Good luck with your garden and let me know how it goes!

I love foggy days, and we have quite a few here in the summer too.
You garden veggies and herbs look fantastic. I grow garlic and enjoy it so much. Thanks for sharing a part of your farm life with us.

Fantastic shots Nancy. I have lots of seeds ready to plant but...I need Spring to really arrive on the prairie before we can do that. I can't wait to see your raised beds.

I'll trade your warm fog for our snow and freezing rain~~~
I'm planting lots of veggies, of every color and kind and we are hoping to find a healthy Wolf River Apple tree and a Sweet Sixteen. Apples are a staple around here. There isn't anything I don't love to plant, but mostly veggies., snap peas, stringless green beans, carrots, tomatoes, onions, cucs, dill, fennel, basil, cylindra beets, flathead cabbage, corn, buttercup squash, zuchinni, yukon gold and red potatoes, sweet potatoes, giant pumpkins, thyme, chives, and gourds, baby pumpkins and Indian corn for fall fun. I'm sure I forgot something but that's the jest of it. GeezLouise, am I going to be busy. Wanna help?

Is the fog more of a sea fret? We get it here on our East coast and sometimes it comes in land for quite a way.

Great pics! Looking forward to the garden this year. Last year, we got busy and didn't tend the garden like we should have. I vow to do better this year :-)
